First open up our activity_main.xml file from res folder and add a DrawerLayout as the root view of the app and inside the drawer layout add the App bar which is done by adding the include tag inside the first child of your drawer layout (in my case its the linear layout) now as the drawer layout is your root layout and you have included the App bar inside the drawers first child, all this makes sure the drawer slides over the App bar as we wanted.
