Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) is a term that references non-developmental items (NDI) sold in the commercial marketplace and used or obtained through government contracts. COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) describes ready-made products that can easily be obtained. The term is sometimes used in military procurement specifications. Thanks to Aitech’s broad military customer base, the company is uniquely positioned to offer both commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and military off-the-shelf (MOTS) products.
The focus was to learn, mature, and transition principles, methods, and techniques for creating systems from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products. We have since expanded our focus to improving the creation and sustainment of systems from any set of largely off-the-shelf (rather than only commercial) constituents (see Systems Interoperability on this website). Commercial-off-the shelf (COTS) military equipment offers the promise of technology advancement, low cost and reduced acquisition time. Unfortunately, it also offers the opportunity for a reliability and logistics disaster because commercial parts, standards, and practices may not meet military requirements.
