At the beginning of the 19th century, ice boxes were used in England. The ice trade between Boston and the South was one of the first casualties of the Civil War. The first ice boxes were made by carpenters in the 1840s, designed to take advantage of something new in American life: the regular household delivery of large blocks of ice that could be obtained daily in large cities and even small ones. But while the first even remotely successful electric household refrigerator didn’t debut until 1915, inventors were working on them at least a decade earlier because of the failings of the ice box as described above. It was a small cooling device that could be used in any icebox to replace the ice itself. The first refrigerator to become widely popular in American homes, the General Electric Monitor top refrigerator, was introduced in 1927.
The first known artificial refrigeration was demonstrated by William Cullen in 1748 – he did not use his discovery for any practical purpose – In 1805 an American inventor Oliver Evans designed the first refrigeration machine – Dr John Gorrie built a refrigerator based on the Evans design in 1844 – used to make ice to cool the air for his yellow fever patients. Blocks of ice were stored in the top of the icebox so cold air would circulated downwards to keep the food cool. The first inventor of the refrigerator was Oliver Evans in 1805, however William Cullen invented the process in 1748 and Jacob Perkins invented more practical improvements in 1834. He was born to Quakers James and Amy Barnes Moore on the 19th, First Month (January) 1730, one of seven children. Moore devised an icebox out of a cedar tub which was insulated with rabbit fur, filled with ice, and wrapped in a piece of sheet metal so he could transport his butter at a cooler temperature.
