For a span that is 16′, I usually use a minimum of 3- 1 3/4 x 11 7/8 LVL. I’m planning on installing a 7’x9′ garage door in a walkout basement of one a one story ranch on the gable side wall. I’m thinking 2×10’s or 9-1/4′ LVL’s would be the minimum. Usually when determining the size of a header for garage door I typically only consider the gravity live and dead loads acting on the beam about its strong axis. 1) LVL absorbs whatever gravity loads are tributary to it. Call a local truss supplier, they usually supply LVL material, glulam, paralam type beams, too. I had this engineered I didn’t notice that they sized for a header over each door, instead of a single header extending across both doors & supprted in the middle I’m wondering which would be better? I looked at a couple houses & so far every one has a single header extending across both doors & supported in the middle There will also be only (2) LVL beams & I have 2×6 walls So I was going to have a 2×12 as additional support for the wall/floor above.
