Due to the difference in manufacturing methods for the various plywood products, they can vary in weight considerably. Basically, since the resins and glues used to hold the wood together are heavier than the wood or wood fibers, the greater the percentage of glue or resin found in the plywood product, the greater the weight. In it, they state that softwood plywood should weigh approximately 3 pounds per square foot, per inch of thickness. Actual plywood weight is slightly less, as the specification is for pre-sanded sheets. APA trademarked High and Medium Density Overlay plywood (HDO and MDO) combine the toughness of Exterior-type plywood with the superior wear of an overlaid surface. These features place HDO and MDO among the most durable construction materials on the market today. PourMor Triple 3 is an MDO concrete-forming plywood manufactured by Roseburg and is designed for exterior concrete-forming applications.
MDO and HDO consist of a core material, like laminated fir veneer, overlaid with a pressed fiber material. In short, this is a typical veneer core plywood (common plywood) with an MDF surface. This gives the best of both worlds; the weight is lower than a full MDF, but the surface is more stable than a veneer core plywood. Page Content. WISA-Form MDO is a spruce based product for various formwork applications. The light weight of the panel makes it easy to handle and medium density overlay on the face gives a constant matt finish to the concrete surface. High Density Overlay (HDO) and Medium Density Overlay (MDO) plywood combine the toughness of Exterior-type plywood with the superior wear of an overlaid surface, placing these products among the most durable construction materials on the market today.
Medium Density Overlay (MDO) and High Density Overlay (HDO) Plywood (also called signboard) are engineered wood panels, originally designed for sign makers. However, they are gaining popularity for other purposes. Cabinetmakers are beginning to see the value of these engineered woods and use them. The plan calls for mostly MDF and what they call MDO, medium density overlay board. Now, I know what MDF is, but I’ve never seen MDO. Am I the only one? Also, I’m planning to replace all MDF with Birch plywood instead. Checking specs on 5/8 plywood on Harbor Sale’s website and found the 4×8 Marine Fir they stock weighs 58 lbs. I believe Rigadog was referring to MDO (Medium Density Overlay: plywood with a phenolic saturated paper face) not MDF (particleboard).
