I installed VirtualBox (with Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop) and Guest Additions on my Windows 7 machine. Everytime it boots up I get the following error message which goes away:. Vboxclient the virtualbox kernel service is not running. exiting. I’m running Ubuntu 15.04 on Virtualbox 5.02. I moved an ubuntu 15.10 VM from Virtualbox v5, where it had a good install of virtualbox guest additions, to VMWare via export-import. 2/dev/null; then Do not start if the kernel module is not present. notify-send VBoxClient: the VirtualBox kernel service is not running. Exiting. From what I’m reading I’m not sure if you’re referring to the host virtualbox program or the client virtual machines you are trying to spin-up.
And it’s usefull only in the case you are running LL in VB as a guest OS. Kind of reminder I guess. My immediate reaction was that there must be some problem that was preventing VirtualBox from starting. On my other rig the ‘virtualbox not running’ appeared in.xsession-errors, to cure that I deleted both virtualbox-guest-utils and virtualbox-guest-x11. I’m also having trouble setting up my shared folder. I got an error when installing Guest Additions: Building the main Guest Additions module FAILED. Not sure if these two issues are related or not. Any help would be great.
To enter a recovery window with Ubuntu you hold the shift key down as you boot the guest and then follow the instructions. I login I get a notification that says something like the virtualbox kernel service is not running: exiting. Uninstalling ‘virtualbox-guest-utils’ package and all its dependencies should stop printing the message. When logging in the error appears: VBox Client: the VirtualBox kernel service is not running.
