Vitsoe is the name for the shelving system designed by Dieter Rams in 1960, which has launched a thousand copies and been in continuous production ever since. Last week, on the morning after attending the opening of 60s 606 is 50, an exhibition at the New York City Vitsoe shop celebrating 50 years of Rams’ 606 Universal Shelving System, I was lucky enough to sit down for 30 quick minutes with the legend.

The company was founded by Danish entrepreneur Niels Vitsoe in 1959 to market a shelving system invented by Dieter Rams, the German industrial designer renowned for the classic gadgets he produced with the consumer products firm Braun. At the same time, the Vitsoe shelving system is beautiful example of modern, minimalist design that remains aesthetically pleasing to contemporary tastes.
